Munchkin Cat problems

Windrunner Cattery Munchkin Breeder

Calico Ragdoll MunchkinBy Charlotte Perrin
(Ramona, Calif.)

I bred my first Munchkin litter in 1994, but succumbed to public opinion and quit until 1998, when I decided to breed what I liked, not what the public wanted.

I find the smallest Munchkin babies to be the most fragile, crowded out sometimes by the larger long-legged siblings, and sometimes caught under Mom and suffocated accidentally.

If mom has large nipples, it can be hard for the smallest to hold on, also. HOWEVER, the strongest usually survive, and by the end of the first week, they become tenacious in their lust for life.

I have actually hand fed the weaker ones, only to have them fade away after a week or so. It seems the ones that make it past the first week, are destined to survive. I also breed a short-leg parent to a long-leg parent, and never inter-breed. I have bred Siamese and Bengals for over 15 years, but now I just love to breed Munchkins.

Compared to those two breeds and the several other breeds that my friends raise, I find Munchkins to have about the same amount of problems from birth to age 10 weeks as the kittens from non-Munchkins.

I also find the mothers to be extra loving and attentive if bred after about 15 mos. of age, in general. Often more so than some of my Siamese and Bengal moms.

Orange Marble Persian MunchkinThe first time a litter of Munchkins was born with feet that were pointing out or almost backwards, I freaked out! However, as the weeks went by, they turned around, and by 9 weeks, they were all correctly oriented! Later I found out that this can happen normally, and doesn't mean it is a genetic problem. It certainly is strange, though.

I have had one Munchkin kitten with a mis-shaped rib cage, that didn't survive past 14 weeks of age. HOWEVER, I also had one Bengal kitten who had the same problem, and died at 10 weeks old.

Other than those two kittens, I have never had a mal-formed kitten in 21 years of cat breeding! So with that information and experience, I can say breeding and/or owning a Munchkin is not a risk, it is pure joy!

Because NO ONE WANTS A NORMAL MUNCHKIN OR AMERICAN CURL OR SCOTTISH FOLD.
You really have your priorities screwed up, don't you? Instead of caring that half of the litter will end up probably in a pound due to MOST breeders selling them for $50 a pop because they are not STANDARD for their breed- all you can cry about is that the cat can't HUNT?
Give me a frigging break. Ya know what? ALL DOGS WERE MADE TO BE HUNTERS. Last time I checked- there were quite a few breeds that would be rather poor at it- I hope you are just as down on them as you are on this poor woman's Munchkin mix.

Munchkin cat.............?

Do munchkin cats have bad promblems because of the way they were bred? i dont have one, i hav a normal cat, but if munchkin cats have breathing or lung problems , why would someone breed them and tourture such a cute little animal. they are adorable though <3

As any severly altered breed of anything - don't bother. You're only asking for trouble.

Take a domestic feline as it was created and stay with that.

Munchkin Cats?

Does anyone have one of these cats? If so, what is your cats personality like and where did you get it from?

I'm thinking about getting one, but not sure where to start looking
I'd want to buy a cat because i LIKE munchkin cats and would prefer to own one, rather than yet another regular ol shelter cat like the 4 I already have

I looked into getting one but they end up having way too many health problems and dont live nearly as long as average sized cats. theyre absolutely adorable but just have too many problems for me....if I had the money to put into all the medical bills i would get one... i just dont have that kind of cash.

I looking for a munchin kitten in orlando FL, does anybody know is there a breeder in Orlando, FL? thanks

I would do a google search for Munchkin cat breeders. Or get a Cat Fancy Magazine they have Munchkin cat breeders advertisments in the back of the magazine. Be careful buying Munchkins. They have inherited Heart problems that come with the minature legs. 70% of Munchins born with the dwarfed legs have weak or enlarged hearts. Its just a thing that runs in the genetics because of the severe inbreeding amoung close relatives to get the dwarfed legs. Be sure they are fully vetted and if they arent i would go right to the vet after you buy one and have his heart checked.

What will you get when you breed munchkin cats with siamese. Will you get muchkins that look like siamese of a mixture... no smart xx answers please
I am not breeding....JUST CURIOUS
DO NOT ANSWER WITH DON'T BREED CATS..I AM NOT BREEDING JUST STUDING GENEOLOGY

The munchkin breed has a genetic disorder that causes the short legs, there would be a chance that this gene could be passed down to some of the kittens but not necessary all of them. Siamese breeds tend to throw their color to their off springs, they may not have the bold coloring like the parent but similarly markings

Munchkin Cat?

I know this isn't recognized as a real breed in the largest cat registries and many others, i was just wondering cats with this mutation, do they have any other health problems besides the short legs? and yes prone to back problems - but anything else?

I have a munchkin persian, and she has not had any health problems.I was not aware they were more prone to disease than other cats.

FYI there are munchkin persian, they have shorter legs, and act more kitten like throughout their life.
As usual, someone gets a "top contributor" badge and they think they know it all.
